Adding a RAM module to an Acer Veriton ES2730G

This page is part of a series of tutorials about upgrading the components of a second hand PC in order to give it a second life.

In this tutorial I will describe step by step how I added a RAM module to the computer (an Acer Veriton ES2730G here but the procedure would be similar for an other PC) in case you need to do something similar.

The PC was originally equipped with a of single 4 GB DDR4 memory module. It was ok for an entry level PC but adding more RAM would greatly improve its performance. I had a spare 16GB DDR4 RAM module so I decided to install it in this PC. Using two RAM modules with the same characteristics would have been better solution (performance wise), but 20 GB RAM would be a nice improvement over the original 4 GB anyway.

The steps described in this tutorial could void the computer warranty. It was not an issue here as this second hand PC (year 2018 model) was not covered by Acer warranty anymore but you should check the warranty conditions of your computer before opening its case.

Be sure to understand what you are doing and if you don’t feel sure about reproducing these steps, ask someone with good computer skills to help you. As always, the author and the website decline any responsibilities about the consequences of trying to reproduce these steps.

Be aware that static electricity can damage computer components. The charges may build up on your body when you walk on carpeted floors or if you wear woolen clothes for instance. You can easily neutralize these static charges by touching any conductive material not isolated from the ground (any metallic furniture or appliance will do) before opening the computer case.

The steps described in this tutorial require:

  • a Phillips Cruciform screwdriver.
  • the RAM module to install.

Be sure to switch off and unplug your computer before opening the case of a computer.

1) First, I had to open the computer case and to remove the metal panel supporting the disk drives in order to have an easy access to the memory slots. I have not included the details of these steps in this tutorial but you can see how to do it by following the steps 1) to 11) of the tutorial describing how to replace the Acer Veriton ES2730G Hard Disk with a SSD.

2) I had a spare Corsair 16 GB DDR4-2400 RAM module that had been installed in an other PC until I replaced it with a pair of 16GB DDR4-3200 RAM modules. So the memory upgrade would be a free here but you should be able to find a pair of second hand 8 GB DDR4-2400 RAM for something like 40 € on eBay.

As you can see in the photo, DDR4 modules have a slightly off center key notch at the bottom edge (a small empty gap between the pins). The notch is used to identify the proper orientation of the memory module in motherboard slot. In such a way that you cannot insert the memory module into the memory slot if it is not properly oriented. The key notch is not located at the same position for different memory standards so that you cannot insert a DDR4 module into a DDR5 slot for instance.

3) This motherboard has two RAM slots and the upper one (in the following photo) already had a 4 GB DDR4 module installed while the lower one was empty.

The memory slot ends have latches (indicated by the fingers) that are used to keep the memory module in place. There is a single latch per slot in this motherboard design (it’s located on the right side here) but some other motherboards designs have double-sided latches (one on each side).

4) The lower memory slot latch was already open so I didn’t have to press it to loosen it. I verified that the memory module notch was on the correct side and I carefully inserted the memory module between the elevated position of the memory slot.

5) I pressed in both memory module ends evenly with two fingers until I could hear a small “click” that meant that the latch was closed and that the memory module was now fastened.

You shouldn’t have to apply a lot of pressure to insert the memory module in the slot. If you feel that the installation is not smooth, you should check whether the memory module is properly oriented and aligned with the slot.

6) That was easy! It was now time to put everything back in place and to close the computer case. I have not included the details of these steps in this tutorial but you can see how do it by following the steps 19) to 22) of this tutorial.

7) I reconnected the computer cables (power supply, HDMI, Ethernet, mouse and keyboard), I switched it on and I entered the BIOS setup to check if the new memory module was detected by the BIOS.

The BIOS was showing 20480 MB of RAM (4 GB + 16 GB = 20 GB = 20480 MB) meaning that the new memory module had been correctly detected.

Conclusion:

To add RAM to a computer is a very easy way to improve its performance. It’s something very easy and safe to do and it took something like 20 minutes here  because I had to remove the upper metal panel to get an easy access to the memory slots.
